Chris Kerley playing the drums

Chris Kerley - Zedi Forder

Drum Tuition +

Hi I'm Chris or "Kerl" if you like! I teach drums in Surrey. I have been drumming for 25+ years alongside song writing, singing and production. I've written, drummed & sung on multiple albums & EP's and built up a strong discography and oodles of practical experience live and in the studio in genres ranging from rock/metal to electro/acoustic/pop.

The drums are the best instrument...I may of course be a little biased! I offer lessons with the aim of raising you to the level of playing your favourite songs as well as creating your own grooves. My tutoring style is informal, easy going, humorous and relaxed. I don't focus on exams and grades. I do focus on fun, fitness, motivation, band dynamics and nurturing your creativity and all at a pace you're comfortable with. My job is to teach you new techniques and inspire you to run with it.

REMEMBER - Drumming is for any age, young or old. I have students from seven to seventy! If you can swing a stick & move your legs you can give drumming a bash! For children under 8 years old I can only currently offer 25 minute sessions. Want to bring a friend and share your session and have a great bonding experience? No problem!

I am enhanced DBS checked.

Besides the obvious musical applications, drumming has a bonus. It is great exercise. Alongside the fun and fulfilment of learning the best instrument and improving your ambidexterity please remember the many healthy positives of taking up the drums, including -

What equipment do you need?
You don't need a drum kit to take lessons! (You'll use one of mine) but you will need something to practice with at home if you hope to see improvement. Practice makes perfect.
I recommend:

  • Sticks

  • Practice pad

  • Ear protection (Muffs & plugs)

  • Isolated ear buds (to listen to audio/click)

When you're suitably invested - A solid acoustic kit or an electronic drum kit (for the quieter option!)

Testimonials

“Chris has written and been involved in some great music and bands. If he can impart a fraction of what he’s learnt over the years then it’s a fee well spent. I came to him as an intermediate drummer. His style is informal but great fun that gets results!” – Chris P (Student)

"I truly enjoy my lessons with Chris. He's a real musician who is very passionate about music and helps you to train your ear rather than just focusing on theory, which helps you to gain more practical skills to be a better drummer. I can already see a huge improvement in my drumming abilities and I'm looking forward to my next session with Chris!"
Agnieszka (Student)

"GREAT DRUM TEACHER. HE IS AS PATIENT AS HE IS TALENTED. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. I have had a couple of lessons so far and have to say Kerl has been great. He is very patient and encouraging. I was a bit apprehensive at first about taking drum lessons but I can honestly say that it's worth every penny and I highly recommend it."

Glenn H (Student)

"I am a complete beginner and Kerl has been fab. Really welcoming and no question is too daft. He’s a really nice guy with a relaxed but very knowledgeable vibe. He is a very experienced musician with a lot to give. I’d highly recommend."
Nicki B (Student)

"Chris has been an absolute magician! His teaching style is masterful! He is quick to identify a person's strengths and nurture them, whilst skilfully targeting weaknesses - not in a negative way - but in a way where you, as the student, feel yourself cared for and understood so that, even after a 5 minute practice exercise, you have progressed without even realizing it. WITH A MASSIVE GRIN ON YOUR FACE TOO! Chris brings out the best of his students and reminded me, after negative experiences with teachers, why I love the drums. He relit a fire in me that, because of him, will never ever be extinguished again." Michael M (Student)
